MIYAMOTO MUSASHI : THE LIFE, DUELS, PHILOSOPHY, AND LESSONS FROM JAPAN’S GRATEST SAMURAI.

Vagabond Manga Portrait(Miyamoto Musashi)

INTRODUCTION:-

Miyamoto Musashi (1583 - 13 June 1645) was a philosopher, strategist, artist, writer, and a renowned swordsman in Japan, and remains so to this day. Today I am talking about this person because I want you all to learn from him some of the very important things that I appreciate in him the most. The most important thing I want to ask you is what do you think is the most important thing to WIN? Most people will say some heavy words like a calm mind, consistency, discipline, becoming a master of a skill or finding a purpose or motive to do something. Yes indeed, they are very, very important, but they can't assure a proper win against your opponents. According to me, the most important thing to win in anything is to be unpredictable at every move because most people can become calm, consistent, etc., to chase their dreams, but when you become unpredictable, it's impossible to understand your next move. I will give you the reason why I am saying this, just stay with me until the last, I will elaborate to you in detail and with an example of this man.

A.)Why was Musashi Miyamoto Invincible?

When he was 13 years old, he had his first duel in which he won so due to which made him very popular in Japan. According to historical accounts and philosophical texts related to him, including principles found in his final work, The Way of Walking Alone (Dokkōdō), Miyamoto Musashi never married because he viewed personal attachment and desire as a path that is a distraction from the purity and perfection of his Sword Art. In those times, Musashi was known as a very unpredictable warrior.

1.)The deadly battle of Musashi and the Yoshioka Family.

Musashi vs 70 Yoshioka members

At the age of 21st, he had a good reputation as a swordsman, and during that time, a boy of 12 years named Yoshioka Matashichiro challenged him to a duel in a sword fight  (It is a very important character who belongs to the Yoshioka Family) because Musashi had once challenged his father and his uncle for a duel where Musashi won and killed them both during the fight due to which is was a stigma for there family so Matashichiro challanged him at night because Matashichiro planning an ambush and took around a group of 70 peoples to kill Musashi during night due to which it was never known as a proper duel. Musashi was always late for all his fights because, for him, it was a technique to irritate and frustrate his enemies, due to which his enemies got angry, and he could use the anger against them. Matashichiro knows that very well, so he went to the battlefield very early in the night to ambush with his group, but they were shocked by seeing that Musashi was hiding behind the shadows of the tree at the very start and waiting for them.

Epic battle of Musashi

Musashi suddenly came out of the shadows and slaughtered Yoshioka Matashichiro in front of 70 of his clan members. Instead of running from the crowd, he stood there, and then one of the most epic battles happened between  Miyamoto Musashi and all 70 members of the Yoshioka clan. Musashi killed all the men until the last, and he had some major injuries after the battle, but he recovered from those after some time and started his journey to become the Greatest Swordsman in history.

2.)Musashi Vs Baiken

After that, from some of the people, he hears about a warrior named Shishido Baiken.

Shishido Baiken

One of the most brutal and deadly warriors in Japan, especially known for his very different kind of gear, instead of carrying any sword, he
wields a sickle and chain (kusarigama).

Musashi challenged him to a duel after deciding everything they meet each other in the field. Baiken was on time, but Musashi was again late for the fight(During that time, it was an honour for warriors to be on time in the location for a battle or duel). Baiken was surprised to see Musashi because he was wielding two swords with him, which is also known as Niten Ichi-ryū.

The fight started, and the beginning was started by Musashi began with his small sword, due to which Baikain moved some steps back to build a momentum with his chain, but he didn't get the time to build up momentum to strike at Musashi.

Niten Ichi-ryū(Two-Sword Style)

Musashi struck him with his small sword to make him lose his balance, and then he used his long sword to stab Baiken, due to which he died, and again Musashi won the duel against Baiken. Baiken has a huge reputation in front of people, but after winning against Baiken, Musashi got a lot of fame.

3.)The Ganryujima Duel

Sasaki  Kojirō, also known as Ganryū Kojirō ( c. 1585 – April 13, 1612), was a Japanese swordsman who may have lived during the Azuchi–Momoyama and early Edo periods and is known primarily for the story of his duel with Miyamoto Musashi in 1612.

After Miyamoto Musashi's fight against Baiken, he started his journey to become the Strongest Swordsman.

At this time, Miyamoto Musashi got a proposal for a duel from THE GREATEST SWORDSMAN OF THAT PERIOD, named  Sasaki  Kojirō

In ancient Japanese history, the fight between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro was the most epic battle in History. Sasaki Kojirō's fighting style was known as Ganryū (or "Large Rock style") and was a derivative of the Chūjō-ryū style of swordsmanship he learned. He fought using a long, two-handed sword called a nodachi and was famous for his Tsubame Gaeshi ("Swallow Cut") technique, which involved a powerful downward swing followed by a swift upward reversal. His style was noted for its speed and unorthodox techniques, though it is sometimes conflated with fictional versions of the character. During the Edo period, Sasaki Kojiro was known for his sword because it was much longer than a normal sword, and in Japan, there was a myth that anyone who could lift the sword of Kojiro would never lose in any fight.

When Sasaki  Kojirō challenged Miyamoto Musashi, the duel was going to happen on the island known as Ganryu Island, and there was a huge amount of audience waiting to see the fight. Most of the people in the audience think that this is going to be the end of Musashi.

The Ganryujima Duel

During this fight, Musashi was coming to the island through his boat, and he was around 2Hours late, and he was not even wearing the proper warrior gear. He was wearing some torn and dirty clothes and a towel around his head, and as a weapon, he was holding a huge piece of a wooden stake from his boat(It was bigger than Sasaki's sword and on the wooden stake, he had made the edge so sharp that he could stab) and a small sword. After seeing this, Sasaki Kojiro was angry and surprised because, he was not having any proper wepone to fight against him nor clothes (During those times, it was a way to honour another warrior by coming on time and wearing the proper gear, but Musashi had done nothing like that), and at the beginning of the duel, Musashi said something taunting to Sasaki Kojiro at the very start of the fight so that in anger he couldn't focus in the fight.

At the very first of the fight, Miyamoto Musashi was using his small sword for attacking and defending and in the last, he used his wooden stake to stab Sasaki Kojiro, due to which Sasaki Kojiro was defeated and killed by Miyamoto Musashi. After winning this fight against Kojiro, Musashi was known as the invincible warrior all over Japan in History.

B.) Points to Understand and apply in your own life:-

If you read this, then I hope you have recognised a pattern in the fights of Musashi Miyamoto. Whenever we went for a duel, he always discovered himself and prepared himself for the new techniques of others. Indeed, he was consistent, calm, disciplined, etc., but the biggest tool for Musashi to win was by becoming unpredictable and challenging others' mind control by taunting or being late in the fight or etc.

From history until now, it has been seen everywhere that for winning any fight, unpredictability, Adaptability, and control over your thoughts and body play a crucial role for winning. To win against unpredictability, you have to master unpredictability and adaptability by yourself.
